HOW TO AVOID HAVING HOME BUILDING REGRETS

September 21, 2016

Are you considering building your next home, but aren’t sure how to avoid having home building regrets? Maybe you’ve talked to friends or family members who built their own home and shared horror stories with you about the process. You needn’t worry about such things with Nilson Homes. We’ve been building new homes in the South Ogden area for a long time and we listen to our homeowners. We value the feedback we get from each and every homeowner who chooses to build with Nilson Homes.

With years of home building experience we know about home building regrets and how to avoid them because we’ve had several homeowners come to us when they were less than happy with a previous builder. What we learned is that the process can’t be rushed and the most important thing a builder can do is listen to the customer. We’ve also learned that thinking towards the future when building a home can be extremely satisfying in years to come.

HOW TO AVOID HAVING HOME BUILDING REGRETS

Aging in Place – If you plan on staying in your home into your senior years, you’ll want to design a home that can accommodate those needs years from now. Installing grab bars in the bathroom, making sure the doors are wide enough for a wheelchair or walker, and installing security cameras and smart home features will ensure your home is built for your lifestyle now and in years to come. An extra bedroom with private bath will be invaluable if you find you need live-in help in your later years.

Storage – No one has ever complained that they had too much storage. When designing your new home be sure to include added storage, and then add a little more.

Bonus Rooms – Also referred to as Flex Space, bonus rooms can be used for anything and often serve many purposes over the lifetime of the house. Right now you might use a bonus room as a formal dining room or a nursery. After they leave for college you can turn that room into a craft room, study, fitness area or as a guest room.

Outdoor Living Spaces – Depending on your region, you may want to utilize your outdoor space. Designing an outdoor living room is currently a hot trend that doesn’t look like it will go away. And why should it, it’s a great idea. You can add hundreds of feet to your actual living space while being able to enjoy it under the stars.

Smart Features – Homes are just getting smarter and smarter. Build with the infrastructure in place, even if you don’t utilize it now. More and more products are being developed to use over wifi and with a smartphone or tablet. You can lock your doors from the office or peek at the baby while on a business trip. Smart features can save time and money, don’t opt out of them if you can help it.

Carpet – Putting carpet in the kids room seems like a great idea until you realize how quickly it gets dirty and worn. Opt for hardwood flooring and use an inexpensive area rug that can be swapped out as the kids get older.

The Little Things – You may not think about it now, but handy features like a gas line for the outside grill and in-ground sprinklers are a great convenience. If you can splurge for some of the little things you’ll be happier with your home. Extra outlets will always be appreciated.
