HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOILET FOR YOUR HOME

May 29, 2019

When it comes to building a home, one of the most overlooked aspects is selecting a toilet. It’s the most essential piece to any household bathroom, yet most homeowners don’t give it much thought until it’s time to actually pick a toilet for their home. But, doing so may be easier said than done.

With so many different toilet brands and designs on the market, picking out a toilet can be an overwhelming and confusing process. From selecting flush mechanisms to comparing water consumption and performance, homeowners may soon find their toilet shopping motivation going down the drain.

The good news is, a little research can go a long way. Understanding what’s available will help you find a model that suits your environment and will last for years to come. To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of things to think about when selecting a toilet.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Comfort – This should always be high on your list of priorities when selecting a toilet, especially when thinking of your toilet as a long term investment. In our experience, taller toilets are the key to comfort!

Durability – Materials play a major role in how long your toilet will last. Opt for high-quality materials to ensure your toilet remains sturdy and durable for a long time.

Eco-Friendly Design – Do your part to protect the environment by selecting a toilet that conserves water. Eco-friendly toilets are designed to use only what is necessary while flushing.

Rim Cleaning Capabilities – Look for a design with rim cleaning capabilities to make your toilet easier to clean. Some brand will have holes punched into the rim to allow water to pump through while others ensure water flows directly into the bowl. You may even find brands that offer a combination of both.

The Seat – Oddly enough, not all toilets include the seat. To avoid an uncomfortable situation, always check the features list! If your chosen toilet doesn’t include a seat, that just means you can pick from a wide variety of available designs. Whether selecting a standard, heated, or soft close seat, pick a design that will improve your bathroom experience.

TYPES OF TOILETS

One Piece vs. Two – Toilets are typically available in either a one piece or two piece design. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but the one you pick may ultimately come down to the space you have available.

TYPES OF FLUSHING SYSTEMS

The type of flushing system your toilet has will have an impact on the effectiveness and performance of your toilet. It will also dictate how much water is used with each flush. These days, there are a plethora of flushing systems to choose from, including the following.

  • Dual Flush
  • Tankless
  • AquaPiston
  • Touchless
  • Upflush

TYPES OF TOILET BOWLS

The leading toilet brands generally offer two different types of toilet bowls: elongated and round. For the most part, the shape of a toilet bowl comes down to user preference but there are a few other factors to consider. First, if your bathroom is short on space, a round bowl may be the best option as it tends to save space. Second, material matters. Some toilet bowl materials offer an anti-bacterial finish for a more hygienic design.

One thing is for certain, there is no shortage of toilets to choose from! At Nilson Homes, we are committed to offering our clients the best designs and materials. When it comes to designing bathrooms, we use two of the top-rated toilets on the market: the Viper Elongated and the Avalanche Elongated.
